Art Doc Archive: a public platform for archiving the online presence of the Berlin art and culture scene
For many years, websites and social media feeds have been central media of the publication of the work done by art and culture professionals. cultural workers. Since the 1990s, self-presentation has formed an important untapped archive of the Berlin scenes, documenting artworks, spaces, events, and exhibitions. However, these important sources of contemporary Berlin history are generally precarious and under the threat of disappearing because there are no long-term strategies to secure them. There is a lack of practicable structures to sustainably archive this often publicly funded cultural heritage. The Art Doc Archive consists of open-source prototypes for archiving and visualizing websites and social media feeds. The first phase of its development was community-based, using data from Berlin artists and cultural professionals. In addition to making these sources available for research, the project also aims to raise awareness of the need to free documentation from the data silos of social media: “Reclaim your archive!” is the motto of the Art Doc Archive blog, which also publishes the thoughts of numerous experts on the principles of such public platforms.
