People often assume that the digitalization of museum collections provides new access in the digital space, that it allows exhibits to be shown in new and more diverse ways, or that it enables the audience to ask their own questions. However, there are very different approaches to be found, from the digital catalogue to the virtual reality tour. But how does this supposedly new form of access work? And how is the social role played by the museum changing in the digital space?
This seminar will view museum projects on the internet, examine them, compare them and log the findings. The basis for this will be the history of museum databases and museum websites, as well as current discussions about digital museum education..
