Kunst und Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert (Art and Society in the Nineteenth Century)

Master’s seminar for Art Studies students being held by Dr. Lukas Fuchsgruber at the TU Berlin, winter semester 2021/22

A romantic wanderer high above the clouds or a sweating cyclops in an iron rolling mill – how can nineteenth-century art be categorized within its social context, and what can be found behind and outside of its familiar motifs? We will connect artworks at Berlin’s Alte Nationalgalerie with their contexts and expand upon museum data by looking at historical and social factors. To do so, we will create a digital network. The seminar will thus intervene in the digital image world of the nineteenth century as it is presented, for example, in online collections or museums.
