The museum and cultural heritage sector has been shaken by debates about how to address colonialism, migration, Islamophobia, LGBTQIA+ groups, and numerous other forms of difference. This comprehensive ethnography by museums and cultural heritage institutions in Berlin gives new insights into the way that “diversity” is understood and implemented in museums and cultural heritage institutions. This book investigates new initiatives and approaches and shows how they function in practice – or not, as the case may be. In this way, it reveals paths for the future – for conducting research and taking action. The sites of field research on which this book is based include the Humboldt Forum, the Museum for Islamic Art, the Museum für Naturkunde, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, as well as Berlin streets and protests.
In the ethnographical volume "Doing Diversity in Museums and Heritage", edited by Sharon Macdonald, Tahani Nadim and Chiara Garbellotto write about “Collecting Diversity: Data and Citizen Science at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.” You will find the complete publication here.
